2015 Distinguished Service to Children Award presented to Danny Thigpin

 

The Distinguished Service to Children Award recognizes efforts for and contributions to the Middle Georgia community focused on improving the well being, care, general welfare, opportunities and education of children ages 18 and below.  Eligible nominees must live in Bibb, Monroe, Jones, Crawford, Houston or Twiggs County.  They must be nominated for VOLUNTEER work, not for professional or paid work.

The 2015 award was presented to Danny Thigpin at the Kiwanis Club of Macon's annual banquet September 22.  Lt. Thigpin is retired from the Macon-Bibb Sheriff's Department and is currently president of the local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.  In his capacity as FOP President, he has instituted many programs benefiting children and families in Bibb, Peach and Crawford Counties.

Active programs benefiting children include

  • Bicycle helmet and ID kit giveaway
  • Back to school shop with law enforcement
  • Christmas shop with law enforcement
  • Bicycle donations
  • Thanksgiving dinners

Through the FOP fundraising efforts, contributions have been made to

  • Navicent Children's Hospital
  • Camp Little Shot
  • The American Heart Association
  • The American Cancer Society
  • Al Sihah Temple
  • Georgia Sheriff's Association (Children)

  • Middle Georgia Easter Seals

The award includes a $500.00 donaton to the charity of Lt. Thigpin's choice.  In this case, the Children's Hospital.

The club is grateful to Lt. Thigpin for all he has done to benefit the children and youth of Middle Georgia.
